Topic: A is for Aphrodite: Mythology and Nathanial Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter
Hawthorne was well versed in Greek mythology and the main characters in his most famous novel reveal a similarity to Greek deities that is undeniable, yet has been completely ignored. Jan Peppler, PhD, believes this was always Hawthorne’s intent. She will share her paper (originally presented at the American Academy of Religion in 2015) outlining the evidence for her theory. (is it weird that I just wrote that in 3rd person?)
An hour of discussion will follow.
The class is free, but we will take donations to help support Light on the Mountains facilities.
Topic: The Scarlet Letter by Nathanial Hawthorne
There is a very strong mythological significance to this classic tale. Consider reading it (or reading it again). Or you may want to view the PBS version from 2003. (The Community Library has this in its film section.) The themes of this tale continue to resonate in our modern society. Trust me, you will never think of The Scarlet Letter the same way again! I will begin the evening by sharing a paper I presented at the American Academy of Religion last year and then open it up for an hour of discussion.
